EXSUM’s purpose is to explore the ethical dimensions of modern uses of American military force. We believe the American military to be overwhelmingly comprised of professional individuals who are committed to the ethical use of force and who seek to minimize harm.
Our keystone project highlights specific instances of this professionalism. By telling the story of those who have successfully navigated turbulent ethical waters, we hope to promote trust in the American military institution and inspire current and future military members to face similar challenges with confidence.

PROJECTS
Initiated in 2026, True North, an EXSUM Project applies methods of investigative journalism to tell the story of American military leaders who have shown extraordinary commitment to moral and ethical principles. Acts of physical courage displayed by our military members are commonly celebrated; we seek to champion some of the countless acts of moral courage so often overlooked.
EXSUM is planning a future project that will facilitate and capture dialog between U.S. military leaders and academics who study war and ethics. This dialog will serve to promote a better understanding of the ethical challenges of modern warfare and other military activities.
